Phases of Rank Advancement

The path to Eagle Scout is divided into several ranks, each building upon the skills and knowledge gained in the previous rank.

Scout Rank

The first rank a Scout earns, focusing on basic Scouting knowledge and skills.

Tenderfoot

Introduces outdoor skills, physical fitness, and citizenship.

Second Class

Builds on Tenderfoot skills with more advanced camping and outdoor techniques.

First Class

The highest of the "basic" ranks, demonstrating proficiency in fundamental Scouting skills.

Star

Requires earning merit badges and taking on leadership responsibilities.

Life

Continues emphasis on merit badges, leadership, and service to others.

Eagle

The highest rank in Scouting, requiring significant merit badge work, a major service project, and demonstrated leadership.
